What a phenomenal stallion!
Britannia’s Mail went to stud on Monday and Tuesday last week for collections, popped on the lorry to Bicton on Wednesday with a mare and then performed a lovely dressage test early on Thursday, followed by a really super SJ round with just one pole, and a fabulous easy and quick XC round to finish clear in his and Ellie’s first 4* event, so we thought. As all flag rules, they are questionable, but despite the technical elimination in our minds he jumped clear!
As I always knew, 4* is well within his capabilities, and he proved to us just how easy he finds it, going beautifully in all three phases and really looking after his 19 year old rider. He was seriously impressive to watch XC – taking all the good distances and making it look effortless. And he demonstrated his professional attitude and level temperament throughout, happily munching carrots with his young fans who came to visit him in the stables. Laura Collett’s comment that “he’s just like a Labrador” is spot on, and quite unique for a stallion!
To be out competing successfully at 4* level as well as carrying out stud duties up until the day he travels to an event, Britannia’s Mail really is something special. No other stallion does this, but his unbelievable temperament and ability to focus means he can combine the two.
Britannia’s Mail is now going to enjoy a few weeks of rest and time at stud (he’s already covered 6 mares this week!) and, depending on the ground, will go to Hartpury CCI-S4* in August.
